Vaginismus is an involuntary tightening of the vaginal muscles that can make intimacy or examination painful or difficult. It is a recognised medical condition that can be discussed calmly with a specialist female doctor.

What is vaginismus?

It is an involuntary physical response in which the muscles around the vagina tighten. It is not a weakness or a fault.

Some women experience it from the start of their marriage, while for others it appears later. Severity and causes differ, and physical and emotional factors may both play a role.

How might it feel?

It is often described as difficulty or pain when attempting intimacy or examination, or a feeling of tightness or closing.

These descriptions are for education only. Experiencing one of them is not a diagnosis; medical assessment is the only way to understand your situation accurately.

When is medical assessment appropriate?

When pain or difficulty recurs and affects your comfort or relationship, it is appropriate to seek a consultation.

A consultation begins with conversation and listening; no examination takes place without explanation and your consent. The aim is understanding first, then discussing suitable options.
